Scabs of Heartbreak

our romantic intimacy
should have blossomed into ebullient prosperity
rambling weeds of doubt choked the spark
flame turned to ash
decaying in a cold shallow grave

had your love arrived
when the rose of innocence was the scent of trustheartbreak
vulnerable as a butterfly alit a flower petal
unaware the harsh winter cold
of embittered betrayal

we could have known the beauty
a lush prolific garden
rare orchids and lilies
roses and magnolia trees
stayed intoxicated on lust’s exotic scents

our hearts should have rejoiced
as offshoots from love’s scattered seeds
roots were never formed
soil remained barren
never watered nor enriched

instead ours was a love
borne in a remembrance of pain
past heartbreak bore its icy scars
frozen; a hardened scab of heartbreak
inexpugnably resisting love’s thaw

so we went our separate ways
neither hating nor loving
the scabs covering the pain
now and then I see your smile
in the summer rain
I miss what should have been love

Aging With Grace

avoiding the ravagesaging with grace
age would demand
would seem divine
looked at more closely
I would decline

old friends would shy away
noting my constant
appearance day by day
never a wrinkle
‘what’s wrong’ they would say

young ones would wonder
how wise, my thoughts strange
younger generation
styles would change

knowing all I would do
was secretly concealed
never tarnishing my youth
too great a temptation to abuse

lines on my face
as the years go by
are the beauty within
why would I want to deny

Winds of Love

one summer daywinds of love
love rambled in
on a borrowed breeze
settled in my heart

came October winds
love drifted away
with the rustle
of felled autumn leaves

Imprisoned Heart

Fearless Love

too long a time
left without barricade
my heart was defenseless

childhood abandonment
created scars; scabbed wounds
strong as a brick wall
entombed my heart

panic guided relationships
hysteria drove love away
absconding from affection
solitude was my stronghold

then there was you

how you found your way
beyond the bricks and mortar
mystifies me still

an honest smile
a silent understanding
a compulsive love

now I have a love story
written in your name
hope replaces fearfulness
love owns the blame

My Little Man

I wrote this poem a few weeks after my son was born, it has taken me many years
to edit. Though it is not my greatest writing work it is without a doubt
my greatest work of heart.

My Little Man

a miracle divine
this baby boy of mine
thankful to the god’s above
allowing me this child to love

a trusting smile, doldrums cure
laughing eyes that I adore
giggles and wiggles, fingers and toes
how much I love him, does he know

if he cries it makes me sad
I tell him stories about his dad
in my arms we rock awhile
I’m always rewarded with his smile

he asks only that I am here
to guide in love and always cheer
silent prayer as I watch him sleep
that he’ll know my love runs deep

as I watch my little guy grow
like a river my love will flow
teaching him wisdom for life’s plan
taking pride in my little man

Self-Knowledge Is Sublime

poetry reveals the truths
the center of your being
illumination and the dark
duality none else is seeing

oft-times you’ll discover
reading your own words
an aspect of yourself
you never ever heard

through your poetry
gain the freedom inclined
whether honest or deceitful
desirable or shunned
self-knowledge is sublime

On The Strings Of A Heart

how is it possible
one day to love someone
enlivened with just one thought, one kiss, one moment
as if you’ve soured to the heavens
drifting on wings of angels

tomorrow arrives
effervescent beauty of yesterday’s love
metamorphic agony of today’s heartache
a tornadic storm
whipping emotions erupt
drastic climate changes annihilating
all that is tender

one wonders where does the beauty go
when love turns to hate

bemused by the fate of heartbreak
anguished by the storm
adrift on winds of inner turmoil
should one conclude
love and hate ~ same emotion
calming, sensual breeze
becomes a violet windstorm
nature takes it course
on the strings of a heart

Aged Eyes

as an ancient book
leather-bound
embellished in gold
aged eyes chronicle
truth and wisdom
do you peer deeply
can you read their story
