Scabs of Heartbreak

our romantic intimacy
should have blossomed into ebullient prosperity
rambling weeds of doubt choked the spark
flame turned to ash
decaying in a cold shallow grave

had your love arrived
when the rose of innocence was the scent of trust
vulnerable as a butterfly alit a flower petal heartbreak
unaware the harsh winter cold
of embittered betrayal

we could have known the beauty
a lush prolific garden
rare orchids and lilies
roses and magnolia trees
stayed intoxicated on lust’s exotic scents

our hearts should have rejoiced
as offshoots from love’s scattered seeds
roots were never formed
soil remained barren
never watered nor enriched

instead ours was a love
borne in a remembrance of pain
past heartbreak bore its icy scars
frozen; a hardened scab of heartbreak
inexpugnably resisting love’s thaw

so we went our separate ways
neither hating nor loving
the scabs covering the pain
now and then I see your smile
in the summer rain
I miss what should have been love
