Scabs of Heartbreak

our romantic intimacy
should have blossomed into ebullient prosperity
rambling weeds of doubt choked the spark
flame turned to ash
decaying in a cold shallow grave

had your love arrived
when the rose of innocence was the scent of trustheartbreak
vulnerable as a butterfly alit a flower petal
unaware the harsh winter cold
of embittered betrayal

we could have known the beauty
a lush prolific garden
rare orchids and lilies
roses and magnolia trees
stayed intoxicated on lust’s exotic scents

our hearts should have rejoiced
as offshoots from love’s scattered seeds
roots were never formed
soil remained barren
never watered nor enriched

instead ours was a love
borne in a remembrance of pain
past heartbreak bore its icy scars
frozen; a hardened scab of heartbreak
inexpugnably resisting love’s thaw

so we went our separate ways
neither hating nor loving
the scabs covering the pain
now and then I see your smile
in the summer rain
I miss what should have been love

Fair Maiden Waits

Fair_Maiden_Waitsacross an ocean blue
fair maiden stands
on white-hot sands
waiting for you

a promise of hope
is her strength to cope
nary a falter
her love never altered

with a heart that’s true
unaware of your guise
hope in her sighs
across an ocean blue
fair maiden waits for you

Save

Save

Waiting Game

Waiting . waiting . waiting . expectation
a waiting game of disappointments
convinced each time will be different
she waits . hopes . cries in realization

He never shows up anymore
leaves her with a heart that’s sore
bound by love . habit she can’t break
he makes promises . and she waits and waits

Just Another Guy

He was just another guy

repeatedly I told myself

after he was gone

but my heart knew

he was never

just another guy

She Waits

Sandy footprints salty sea

thundering waves echo emptiness

of a love long gone

year after year she waits

alone at the shoreline

for her sailor’s return

Sting

Oh the sinister thoughts that lurked
behind that amiable smile
when friendship and love you imparted
plotting deception all the while

In comradeship my trust I placed
while you sought dishonest gain
enticing my heart for entrapment
never intending to remain

To have loved and lost is bearable
Although it wounds the heart.
how cruel the blow when the trusted one
has beguiled you from the start.

Lines that etch your gentle face
the comfort of your warm embrace
the out pour of your total devotion
uninhibited honest emotion

These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

The strength of character you display
providing protection every way
Giving support in all I achieve
approval glances on a quiet eve
These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

The twinkle in your smiling eyes
a whisper of awakening sighs
sensual stirring the morning after
teasing kisses and hearty laughter
These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

Outpour of comfort when things are amiss
a heart overflowing with romantic bliss
Your quiet resolve when we disagree
to end the argument peacefully
These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

In a twinkling life for me had changed
all the colors rearranged
love’s profusion, passion’s heat
I’m overflowing, at last complete
These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

With implicit trust I give my all
no doubt or fear, there are no walls
Each day my love grows deep and strong
love that endures a lifetime long
These cherished things
inspire my heart to sing
a melody of love

The Ghost of Treadway Hall

Walking a trail from the Kansas City Plaza took me past a huge dormitory that was no longer in use. Walking home at dusk, the lights would come on in the unoccupied dorm. I use to glance up into the windows of the tall structure and imagine students of yore. One day I came home after my walk and wrote this poem.

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
the music plays and the lights will glow
while a spirit stirs in the rooms below
wandering the halls in a woeful stance
mourning her plight at the fraternity dance
humiliated she had become
rebuked and despised, a foolish one

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power.
a whispering chant; Chelsea and Lance, ghost
in a diaphanous gown the spirit would dance,
recalling fervor, anguish, then fright
living the torture o’er night after night.
marriage oath Lance vowed to declare.
cruel twist of fate; instead this nightmare.

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power.
two lovers in secret Chelsea and he
social stigmas their love would not free
Lance was the elite, Chelsea the poor
he was the gold she was the ore
Lance was her savior, internal fire
reviving her soul from poverty’s mire

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
stolen moments the two would employ
ardent intrigue in search of its joy
aflame with passion Lance would declare
time to possess her if she would dare
whispered endearments of loving forever
promises made in a wanton endeavor

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
ofttimes in dark shadows the pair would meet
exploring the depths of their passion’s heat
walking on air, Chelsea foresaw the chance
on Lance’s arm she would enter the dance
an outcast no more, She experienced pride
Lance would one day make her his bride

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
shadowy figure at to the top of the stairs
moans can be heard as the spirit despairs
too vivid the memory how she did wait
dressed for the dance, but cometh no date
minutes ticked loudly as Chelsea perceived
heart wrenching awareness of being deceived

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
in disbelief Chelsea left for the dance
caught Lance with another by happenstance
now discerned she should never have dared
to join the illustrious world that Lance shared
her deceiver glanced up catching her eye
Chelsea’s heart burst as she started to cry

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
her countenance was no longer proud
her footsteps quickening from the crowd
with broken heart and spirit crushed
into the dark poor Chelsea rushed
deluge of tears till eyes were blurred
in Treadway Hall her scream was heard

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
fleeing from the dance floor into the cold
yearning for the promise to have and to hold
yet honesty screamed of her dark sad fate
the innocent virgin he did vitiate
realizing now in this hour of fright
stark debasement of her dire plight

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
stung by deception of one she held dear
blast of the car’s horn she did not hear
screeching halt and Chelsea was hit
her now lifeless body thrown into a ditch
outpour of her love led Chelsea to shed
blood, sweat and tears: now she lay dead

as dark approaches the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
approach near the dorm on a night that is still
groans from the spirit will give you a chill
the lights will glow as the music plays
Chelsea’s presence is felt as the spirit sways
wandering the dorm in the midnight hour
in Treadway Hall there comes a power
